Donald Trump appointed on Sunday a new particular envoy to Greenland, the huge Arctic island he has said he would like to annex, sparking a recent diplomatic row with Denmark.

Jeff Landry, the newly appointed envoy and Republican governor of Louisiana, has said on X that it was an honour to serve in a “volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US”.

Greenland’s prime minister said the island must “decide our own future” and its “territorial integrity must be respected”.

The dispute over his appointment comes as strategic competitors in the Arctic grows, with melting ice opening new delivery routes and rising access to precious mineral sources.
