Pope Leo XIV has been pictured celebrating Mass from hospital, in the first pictures of him launched by the Vatican since he underwent lung surgical procedure.

The 71-year-old pontiff was identified with lung cancer after the surgical procedure at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, which the Vatican said had been “successful” and proceeded without issues.

The pictures shared on Friday confirmed the Chicago-born Pope carrying a inexperienced gown while standing behind a makeshift altar on the tenth flooring of the hospital.

Pope Leo “celebrated with the medical and nursing staff” and thanked staff for their service, the Vatican press workplace said.
