There were lots of moments this season when it didn’t appear like this collision course would occur.
Sure, Connecticut’s girls’s basketball workforce was undefeated and dominant. A visit to the Final Four — and a bid for a second consecutive national championship — appeared like a lock. But the Huskies’ males’s workforce struggled in Big East play after a sturdy begin. They lost in the convention event to St. John’s. They didn’t have the same superpowered abilities as they did on their latest title groups.
But this weekend, when the males’s Final Four descends on Indianapolis and the girls’s national semifinals unfold in Phoenix, will revolve around UConn again. If both Connecticut groups emerge with titles, it’ll mark the third time — becoming a member of 2004 and 2014 — that they’ve won championships in the same seasons. No other college has achieved that feat once.
And in a new, ever-changing panorama of school basketball that’s drastically totally different from the backdrop to either of the earlier two cases when they both won titles, Connecticut’s state school hasn’t relinquished its place as a basketball powerhouse.
