Households attempting to dodge hovering power payments are being warned they could face jail, hefty fines – and even risk death.
Energy regulator Ofgem has issued a stark alert over the growing drawback of “energy theft”, where people tamper with fuel or electrical energy meters to cut what they pay. It warned that the unlawful apply is not only a crime but a main security hazard that can lead to fires, explosions and severe damage. In a public warning, the watchdog said: “Tampering with your meter is illegal and could be dangerous.”
