A serious NATO nation has confirmed that it will ship army troops to Greenland as Donald Trump intensifies his plan to purchase the island. France is the newest European nation to deploy army forces along with Germany, Norway and Sweden, to help enhance the Arctic island’s security.
“The first French military elements are already en route”, and “others will follow,” French President Emmanuel Macron announced Wednesday, as French authorities said about 15 French troopers from the mountain infantry unit were already in Nuuk for a army train.
The French President also warned that “peace is under threat” globally, as he insisted that “France and the Europeans must continue to be present wherever their interests are threatened.”
He said that “Europeans have a particular responsibility there,” including Denmark’s EU and NATO membership.
Macron confirmed that France has joined the Danish workout routines deliberate as half of the Operation Arctic Endurance, and confirms that a first staff is “already on site and will be reinforced in the coming days by land, air and sea assets.”
He said: “This is the role that France must play: to be available when assessing the threat, to be able to adapt and to stand alongside a sovereign state to protect its territory.”
The transfer comes as the US administration has been pushing for buying Greenland, as European nations proceed to oppose.
After assembly US officers including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said it was “clear that the president has this wish of conquering Greenland”, which he argued was “absolutely not necessary”.
On Thursday, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the intention was “to establish a more permanent military presence with a larger Danish contribution,” according to Danish broadcaster DR. He said troopers from several NATO nations will be in Greenland on a rotation system.
Earlier this week, Mr Poulsen had announced a stepped-up army presence in the Arctic “in close cooperation with our allies,” calling it a necessity in a security atmosphere in which “no one can predict what will happen tomorrow.”
He said: “This means that from today and in the coming time there will be an increased military presence in and around Greenland of aircraft, ships and soldiers, including from other NATO allies.”
Reacting to the deplomyent, journalist Lewis Goodall said: “Truly stunning development. European troops being deployed to Greenland as a deterrent to… the United States.”
Meanwhile, Russian state TV hailed the “new world order” as NATO allies conflict over Greenland.
