The Cleveland Cavaliers opened their first of three preseason video games with a loss to the Boston Celtics.
We’re attempting a new format for participant grades this yr. The aim is to separate gamers into classes and trim some fats from each recreation. We’ll be focusing more on the standouts (for higher or worse) instead of grading every particular person participant.

As always, grades are based mostly on our common expectations for each participant.
Player of the recreation
Jaylon Tyson
14 factors, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
No one performed enough minutes tonight to actually earn this title. And it’s onerous for me to give it to a participant who did not even play in the second half. But Tyson appeared like he was taking the next step in his natural development, scoring 14 factors in 16 minutes by being in every single place offensively.
Tyson hit a three-pointer, cut to the basket for a handful of layups, and ran the two-man recreation with Evan Mobley with effectivity. He has the instruments to be a unbelievable position participant off the bench, and this was a signal that Tyson is prepared for that leap.

Gold Stars
Craig Porter Jr.
5 factors, 10 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
Porter has been challenged to be more of a chief off the bench. Dishing out 10 assists feels like a good begin. The fourth-year guard navigated the flooring and ran the offense like someone who has expertise under his belt. That could be the difference-maker in his race to be Cleveland’s backup level guard this season.
Grade: B+
Meleek Thomas
11 factors, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
After a quiet first half, Thomas opened the second with a string of profitable performs. A drive to the basket, adopted by a catch-and-shoot triple, capped off by a steal and coast-to-coast end. Moments later, he’d add to the run with another steal and an outlet move to Craig Porter Jr. for an help.
In the fourth quarter, Thomas was given the alternative to dribble the ball more continuously. This led to some slippery moments where he broke down his defender and got into the center of the flooring for a bucket. His shifty deal with will be an X-factor in his development.

Passed the Class
Peyton Watson
7 factors, 4 rebounds, 4 assists
Cavs followers got their first look at Watson in a Cleveland jersey tonight. It was transient, but it was principally candy. Watson dished out 4 assists as he pushed the ball in transition and match in properly with the relaxation of the starters. He also buried a nook three-pointer, though he shot just 1-of-4 from downtown.
Watson also defended Mike Conley to begin the recreation. An indication that Cleveland plans on utilizing Watson to shore up their point-of-attack protection. We won’t know how impactful this can be until the actual video games begin. But Watson’s mobility on the perimeter appeared robust, even if the defensive effort around him was missing tonight.

Grade: B-
Donovan Mitchell
There is not much for Mitchell to accomplish in preseason other than get his ft under him. He did so tonight, spinning his manner around the court for 11 factors and doing just enough before bowing out at halftime.
Grade: B-
Sam Merrill
8 factors, 0 rebounds, 0 assists
We know what Merrill does on a basketball court. He did not document a single stat other than scoring, but seeing him drill a 30-foot bomb is always going to get me excited.
Merrill shot 3-for-4 from the flooring and scored 8 factors before resting the the rest of the recreation.
Grade: B–
Evan Mobley
8 factors, 1 rebound, 1 help

I thought Mobley would have had more assists tonight given the manner he was shifting the ball. His deal with and imaginative and prescient appeared as robust as ever, with Mobley strolling the ball up the court and plowing into the lane for his most spectacular bucket of the evening.
He wasn’t much of a issue on protection, however. We know it’s preseason, but someone still has to grab a rebound.
Grade: C+
Missed the mark
Merio Hezonja
5 factors, 5 rebounds, 3 assists
Hezonja just performed his first NBA (preseason) recreation in roughly six years. So, we won’t choose him too harshly for having cold ft.
That said, Hezonja appeared clumsy in his first few minutes. An ugly turnover and a very hectic sequence dribbling the ball had us all questioning if his return to the league would be more uneven than we thought. He shot 2-for-7 from the discipline and has much to show shifting ahead.

His presence on the glass and a number of assists could be something he hangs his hat on in the future. He’ll just need to get more snug on the flooring before all of that clicks into place.
