A Saudi Arabian scholar has been stabbed to death while on a 10-week placement in Cambridge.
Mohammed Algasim, 20, was pronounced lifeless at Mill Park at 12.01am on Saturday and a 21-year-old man has since been charged with homicide.
Cambridgeshire Police said Algasim had been on a 10-week placement learning in Cambridge.
EF International Language Campuses Cambridge, a personal college offering English language programs to abroad college students, said it was “deeply saddened” to confirm one of its college students had died.
‘Unprovoked attack’
Cambridgeshire Police said on Monday that it is believed Algasim was “stabbed in an unprovoked attack”.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday.
The drive said Chas Corrigan, of Holbrook Road, Cambridge, has been charged with homicide and possession of a knife in a public place.
Corrigan is scheduled to seem at Peterborough magistrates’ court later on Monday.
A 50-year-old man, also from Cambridge, was arrested on suspicion of helping an offender. He stays in custody.
Floral tributes have been left at the scene.
A message, on a piece of paper taped to a barrier behind the shows, said “may your soul be at peace” and had coronary heart shapes drawn on it.
It also said “inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un”, which is an Arabic phrase which means “to God we belong and to Him we return”.
EF International Language Campuses Cambridge advised The Telegraph: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our adult students was fatally injured in a public space.
“Emergency services responded immediately, but the student tragically passed away.
“We are working closely with the local police, who are investigating the incident and have confirmed they made arrests.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We are providing support to all students and staff affected by this tragic event and have organised counselling sessions.”
The personal college added: “We will not be commenting further while the investigation is ongoing.”
Det Insp Dale Mepstead, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “The investigation remains ongoing, and we continue to urge anyone with information who has not yet come forward to contact us.”
