After combing over statistics and results, and with the guidance of local athletic directors and coaches, we at the Daily News selected All-Stars for baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys volleyball, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls track and field and rugby.
Although the sports and skill sets may vary, there’s no denying that this group put up otherworldly numbers this spring while helping their respective teams find success – whether that be on the diamond, field, court or track.
Without further ado, the Daily News presents its 2024 All-Stars for girls tennis:
Siyona Bhagwat, Algonquin
She went 15-1 in her freshman season at No. 2 singles for the Titans. She was named a Mid-Wach A all-star, and Algonquin reached the Division 1 state tournament.
Diya Bhattacharya, Westborough
She went undefeated in Mid-Wach A play across No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles, finishing with a 12-4 record. The Rangers reached the Division 2 Final Four, falling ot eventual state champion Longmeadow.
May Chen, Hopkinton
She went 13-5 as a sophomore at No. 1 singlesand helped the Hillers reach the Division 1 Round of 16. Chen, who trains at Westborough Tennis & Swim, was named a Tri-Valley League all-star. “May enjoys playing for something bigger than herself – her teammates, coaches and school. She takes great responsibility with how she performs on the court and how she can help her team succeed,” Hopkinton coach Lyn Calkins said. “Her serve and her heavy topspin forehand are two of her strengths.”

Caroline Cosgrove, Holliston
She started her high school career with an undefeated freshman season. Cosgrove went 18-0 and won 36-of-37 sets. The Panthers pulled an upset to reach the Division 2 Round of 16. “Caroline’s poise for a freshman was remarkable. Her play was exemplary all season. We are excited to see her progress over the next three years,” Holliston coach Joel Bernstein said.
Brooke Daniels, Franklin
The junior No. 1 doubles player paired with Sydney Tolonen and helped the Panthers claim their first Hockomock title. They went 16-3 and lost just nine sets all season. Daniels has been a Hock all-star each of the past two years. Franklin won a preliminary round game in the Division 1 state tournament. “Brooke & Sydney have been our catalysts these past two seasons and the driving force in Franklin winning its first Hockomock League title ever,” Panthers coach Bob Pingeton said.
Kate Firesema, Hopedale
The sophomore went 13-2 at second singles, as the Blue Raiders advanced to the Division 4 Final Four. She is a founding member of Women in STEM, a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, as well as a member of DECA. Firesema is a Principal’s list student, who volunteers at her church. She babysits and works art a local preschool during the summer.
Bella Gopen, Wellesley
The freshman went 14-5 in her debut varsity season and was the finalist at the individual state tournament. She led the Raiders to the Division 1 state championship and was a Bay State Conference all-star.

Leah Hills, Dover-Sherborn
The sophomore was named the Tri-Valley League MVP after leading the Raiders to the Division 3 quarterfinals.
Sahasra Kommineni, Westborough
She went 19-2 playing across three different positions. Kommineni went 6-0 at No. 3 singles and added a win at No. 1 singles. She primarily paired with Elena Chen at No. 1 doubles. They compiled a 12-1 record and helped the Rangers reach the Division 2 Final Four. “She took up the sport of tennis right before the start of last season, and has progressed to be the most reliable player on the team. Her natural tennis ability is so good that when I see her do something I think is unconventional, I don’t want to correct it because she’s probably right,” Westborough coach Scott Henderson said. “Her court awareness and ability to return everything make her very tough to beat.”
Sarah Mackey, Wellesley
The junior led the Raiders to the Division 1 state championship by securing the clinching victory in the title match against Boston Latin at No. 3 singles. Her 21 victories were a team high. Mackey is a three-time Bay State Conference all star. She has played every position but No. 1 doubles.
Pia Obrador, Hopedale
Just a sophomore, she’s the two-time Dual Valley No. 1 singles player and DVC Player of the year. Obrador went 15-0 in matches against Division 4 competition, as the Blue Raiders reached the Final Four. She’s been undefeated for the past two years in division play.
Kimmy Tai, Wellesley
Her only loss as a freshman came in three sets, and she finished 19-1. Wellesley captured the Division 1 state championship with her at No. 2 singles. Tai was named a Bay State Conference All-Star.
Sydney Tolonen, Franklin
She was named a Hockomock all-star for the second year in a row. The No. 1 doubles player paired with Brooke Daniels to go 16-3, losing just nine sets all season. “They both play with such composure but also bring a high energy level which their teammates feed off,” Panthers coach Bob Pingeton said. Franklin won a preliminary round game in the Division 1 state tournament.
Shannon Welburn, Wellesley
One half of the Raiders twin No. 1 doubles team, she was a Bay State Conference All-Star and powered Wellesley to the Division 1 state championship. She and her sister Shea won the decisive point in the state semifinals against previously unbeaten Lexington. Her record was 24-1.
Shea Welburn, Wellesley
One half of the Raiders twin No. 1 doubles team, she was a Bay State Conference All-Star for the second year in a row and powered Wellesley to the Division 1 state championship. She and her sister Shannon won the decisive point in the state semifinals against previously unbeaten Lexington. Her record was 18-2.

Grace Zhang, Natick
The Bay State Conference Carey MVP finished third in the individual state tournament. She went 14-1 during the regular season and 2-0 in the Division 1 state tournament as a sophomore. Zhang was named Natick’s MVP and a No. 1 singles league all-star.
