From the Warriors’ perspective this feels like good business, they dangle on to someone they see as half of their future without impacting cap space.
Golden State fan favourite Brandin Podziemski is staying in Golden State after the sides agreed to a five-year, $110 million rookie contract extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports. There is a mutual option for both the participant and the workforce in the fifth yr.

That’s stable starter money for the 6’4″ guard who performed in all 82 video games for the Warriors last season (beginning 43) and led the workforce in mintues, averaging 13.8 factors, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per sport while taking pictures 37.1% from 3-point vary. He’s also a stable perimeter defender, which the Warriors need next to Stephen Curry, even if that pair would not always really feel like the most natural match (like Klay Thompson was). That said, Steve Kerr and the Warriors workers clearly trust him by how much they have him on the court.
While the Warriors could have held out to attempt and get Podziemski to signal for less as a restricted free agent, they needed to keep a fan favourite and not risk another workforce making an even bigger offer next summer time to attempt and poach him.
This contract will begin at $18.9 million next season, reports Anthony Slater of ESPN. Podziemski’s cap maintain for next summer time would have already been $17 million, so this contract would not actually eat into the $55-60 million in cap space the Warriors expect to have next summer time to chase a star or stars to put next to Curry (or re-sign Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green).
Podziemski becomes the fifth participant from the 2023 NBA Draft class to attain a rookie-scale extension so far, becoming a member of Victor Wembanyama, Amen Thompson, Ausar Thompson and Keyonte George. The deadline for extensions for anyone else in that class is Oct. 19.
