Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson is trying to unload his $70 million Beverly Hills megamansion, changing into the newest tech billionaire to loosen his ties to California as some of the state’s wealthiest residents head for the exits.
The Swedish gaming mogul, who famously outbid Beyoncé and Jay-Z for the trophy property in 2014, is asking precisely what he paid 12 years in the past — despite pouring thousands and thousands more into upgrades, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The itemizing comes amid a broader retreat by some of California’s richest tech figures, with billionaires including Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin establishing footholds in Florida as the Golden State grapples with a proposed wealth tax to be voted on next week.

Persson’s causes for promoting seem completely different, however. His itemizing agent, Aaron Kirman of Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California, said the billionaire merely isn’t spending much time in Los Angeles anymore.
“We all know that the luxury markets across the US are slower than they used to be,” Kirman instructed the Journal, including that Persson “is committed to selling.”
The roughly 22,300-square-foot property sits on almost an acre in Trousdale Estates, one of Beverly Hills’ most coveted enclaves, and options eight bedrooms, 15 bogs and two swimming swimming pools.

Originally developed by luxurious home builder Bruce Makowsky, the property made headlines when Persson snapped it up for a then-record $70 million.
The buy came just months after Persson bought Minecraft developer Mojang to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.
And the home was already packed with over-the-top facilities when he moved in.
The unique buy included a $200,000 sweet room, a 2,500-bottle wine cellar, an 18-seat movie show and a car carry designed to show luxurious autos, according to Forbes.

Persson later spent thousands and thousands including a recording studio and a personal nightclub, full with a DJ sales space, a bar and a dance ground.
Well-known artists were invited to report music at the property, according to co-listing agent Branden Williams of the Beverly Hills Estates.
The property also provides panoramic views stretching from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean, while a separate swimming pool serves the main suite.

But Persson’s determination to promote comes as California’s relationship with its billionaire class faces rising scrutiny.
In March, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg agreed to pay $170 million for an unfinished waterfront mansion on Miami’s unique Indian Creek Island, nicknamed the “Billionaire Bunker.”
Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have also bought lavish South Florida properties while decreasing their California ties.
The strikes have unfolded against the backdrop of a proposed one-time 5% wealth tax focusing on California billionaires, which has sparked issues among some of Silicon Valley’s wealthiest entrepreneurs.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has also publicly weighed leaving California over the proposal.

Developers flooded Los Angeles with more and more lavish speculative mansions during the mid-2010s, ultimately saturating the market with properties aimed at the world’s wealthiest consumers.
Earlier this yr, another extravagant Bel-Air property, recognized as La Fin, slashed its asking price by $40 million, from $139 million to $99.95 million.
“We’re not doing aspirational pricing anymore,” Kirman instructed the Journal.
The broader Beverly Hills housing market has also proven resilience, with the median single-family home price reaching $8 million in the three months ending Sept. 30, up 18.8% from a yr earlier, according to Redfin knowledge.
Unlike properties within the metropolis of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills houses are exempt from Measure ULA, the metropolis’s so-called “mansion tax.”
The itemizing is held by Kirman and Katia De Los Reyes of Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California, alongside Branden and Rayni Williams of the Beverly Hills Estates.
