LONDON (Reuters) -British authorities arrested nearly one in 5 people they checked in a week-long crackdown on migrants working illegally as supply riders last month, the authorities’s inside ministry said on Saturday.

Immigration enforcement officers stopped and questioned 1,780 people between July 20 and 27 and 280 people were arrested, the inside ministry said, including asylum support was being reviewed for 53 of those detained.

The operation was half of a push by the authorities to sort out unlawful migration which also contains new legal necessities for firms to confirm employees’ immigration standing.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is going through strain to show voters he can counter unlawful immigration with support rising for Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage’s Reform UK get together.

“This government is making sure rules are respected and enforced,” border security minister Angela Eagle said.

As effectively as the arrests, civil penalty notices were issued to 51 companies, including car washes and eating places, which could face fines for using unlawful employees, the ministry said.

Police seized 71 automobiles, including 58 e-bikes, and confiscated 8,000 kilos ($10,751.20) in money and 460,000 kilos price of illicit cigarettes.
